McDonalds joins hands with Q8 for fast-charging infrastructure

The very first Belgian McDonald’s restaurant with Q8 fast-charging station has opened in Heusden-Zolder. Thanks to a strategic partnership with Q8 and Storm, customers can charge their electric vehicle there while consuming their meal.
The Q8 electric fast-charging station in Heusden-Zolder can accommodate 12 cars to charge simultaneously with a charging capacity of up to 400kW. An average car with a 50kWh battery can charge to a state-of-charge of 80% in 15 to 20 minutes here. While charging, customers can enjoy a meal in the restaurant or on the terrace.
“This restaurant at a fast-charging station fits perfectly into our sustainability strategy where – in addition to energy and water-saving measures and initiatives around packaging and waste – we are also committed to electric driving,” said Mark van Boven, Development Lead at McDonald’s Belgium. “In addition to the more than 200 slow chargers we already have at our restaurants, we are now adding fast chargers in collaboration with Q8 and Storm. Together, we will also look for even more locations in our country to build this kind of station. The ambition is to create dozens more fast-charging stations with McDonald’s in the next five years.”
Food, drinks and groceries
“We are extending our convenience concept at Q8 petrol stations to fast-charging electric cars,” explained Steven Clauwaert, Head of Fast Charging at Q8. “After all, we want our customers to also be able to eat and drink something during fast charging. Next year we will also open fast-charging stations with shop where customers can do their shopping or have a coffee. We believe this will make a big difference in the experience and comfort of our customers with an electric car.”
Q8 and Storm are building up to 200 new fast-charging stations at visible and easily accessible prime locations across Belgium over the next five years. “Both near major traffic axes and near urban centres. The first four of these fast-charging stations opened in September in Paal-Beringen, Kampenhout, Aalter and Waasmunster,” says Bart Van Renterghem, Director Operations at Storm. “At half of these stations, a shop and self-service restaurant will also be provided.”
Storm, together with Q8 and McDonald’s, will develop further fast-charging stations with shop and restaurants in Stekene, Tongeren and Waregem, among others, by 2025. “Thanks to the combination of our expertise around renewable energy, mobility and retail and restaurant experience, we are convinced that we can offer our customers a unique experience,” Van Renterghem concludes.
