Europe wants more charging stations and hydrogen refuelling points along motorways

A charging point every sixty kilometres along every European motorway, and a hydrogen filling station every two hundred kilometres. That is what Europe wants to see realised in the coming years.
The intentions are the result of an agreement reached by the European Parliament and member states last week. The new law should increase the number of charging and filling points. The decision follows an earlier agreement on banning petrol cars in 2035 that was nevertheless concluded between the European Commission and member states after much discussion.
The decision requires public charging stations to be present along all European highways by the end of 2027 with a maximum distance of 60 kilometres between each. Europe also wants more hydrogen filling stations, mainly meant for freight transport. By 2030, trucks should find one refuelling point every 200 kilometres.
Huge challenge
“Charging, and especially fast charging, should in fact be as easy as refuelling. Only then will you convince consumers. In the fairly short term, the number of charging stations in Europe must start rising, up to a possible fourfold increase in two years,” says Dutch rapporteur Caroline Nagtegaal (VVD). She adds that the Netherlands’ pioneering role in the field of charging stations should not lead to complacency. “We have a huge challenge in terms of grid capacity. How can we ensure that all those charging points and electric cars are supplied with power, if the pressure on the grid increases? We need to work with grid operators and lay thicker cables to and from the charging points.”
Europe has released €1.5 billion for companies to meet the new requirements. “It’s not a lot of money when you look at the task,” Nagtegaal said, “but we hope the market will pick it up.”
