‘Do petrol stations belong in residential areas?’

A petrol station at a junction where dangerous traffic situations regularly arise has prompted the local political party BurgerBelangen Hengelo to question whether it is at all desirable to have petrol stations in residential areas. The extra traffic to these locations “increases the risk of traffic unsafe situations and affects the liveability in the neighbourhoods concerned.”
The party writes this as an introduction to a series of questions on petrol stations in residential areas. In the over 80,000-strong town in Overijssel, the petrol station at the junction of Breemarsweg and Oelerweg is a particular point of concern for BurgerBelangen.
“Here there is a petrol station on the corner where dangerous situations regularly arise. This point has been discussed several times in the past and limited measures have been taken before. Unfortunately, these have not yet led to a structural improvement. Now that the Breemarsweg is undergoing major work, it would be logical and efficient to include this bottleneck in the redesign.”
Broader demand
“By extension, the presence of petrol stations in residential areas raises questions,” it continues. BurgerBelangen Hengelo cites several examples of such locations and argues that they create more traffic and unsafe situations in residential areas. “This brings up the broader question of whether petrol stations belong in
residential areas,” the party said. It would therefore like to know what the Municipal Executive of Hengelo thinks about both the said filling station at the junction and the desirability of filling stations in Hengelo’s residential areas.
