‘Menhirs’ the eye-catcher at Tamoil’s newest T-Energy filling station on N34 near Emmen

On the busy N34 provincial road to the west of Emmen in the province of Drenthe, Tamoil is completing the construction of a brand-new T-Energy filling station. The eye-catcher of the station are three ‘menhirs’ supporting the canopy, a subtle reference to the region in which there are plenty of megalithic tombs.
The N34 west of Emmen in Drenthe is known as the ‘Hunebed Highway’. Reason enough for Tamoil to give the filling station it is building at the ‘De Blikken’ stop a striking design. Because of its unique location, the T-Energy will have an appearance that refers to the time when the dolmens were built. Architectural firm Meijer & van Eerden designed an unusual filling station with, as an eye-catcher, three columns in the form of metre-high ‘menhirs’ supporting the canopy. The new T-Energy will also offer a shop with food and drink and at the pump all known fuels, including several sustainable alternatives. On the opposite side of ‘De Blikken’, at the Westerveld stop, Tamoil is building a second filling station.
Refuelling again
With the arrival of two filling stations on either side of the N34, motorists will soon be able to refuel on this road for the first time in almost four years. The N34 had three refuelling locations, but due to the widening of the road, they had all disappeared. It was Tamoil that won an auction held by BZO on behalf of the province of Drenthe in late 2022. This put the lease rights of ‘De Blikken’ in the hands of the Ridderkerk-based company for 15 years. If everything goes according to plan, refuelling will be possible at T-Energy De Blikken in the second quarter of 2025.
