Scammers active at French petrol stations

A new form of scam is circulating at French petrol stations. Criminals there approach motorists with fabricated stories to extort money.
It seems harmless: someone approaches you at a petrol station because his credit card has failed, and asks you to let him fill up a few litres on your card. He will pay in cash, though. But then the note he gives you turns out to be fake, and you are scammed. If you try to pay with the note yourself, you even get into trouble again.
This new trick mainly turns up at unmanned petrol stations in France. After all, there the crooks are less likely to get caught. Service stations where you can only pay by credit card outside opening hours are also a target.
